  • Medical Uses:
    Radioactive isotopes of iridium, such as iridium-192, are used in brachytherapy to treat cancer by delivering radiation to tumor cells. 
  • Electronics:
    Iridium is a component in LED screens and other advanced electronic devices, including cell phones and iPads. 
  • Historical and Specialized Items:
    Alloys of iridium and platinum were used to make the international standard kilogram and the SI Metre Bar. These alloys are also used for pen nibs and pivot bearings. 
  • Catalysis:
    Iridium compounds are used in industrial catalysis and for producing films of high purity. 
  • Spark Plugs:
    Iridium's high melting point and low reactivity make it ideal for the tips of spark plugs, which must withstand extreme temperatures during fuel ignition. 
  • High-Temperature Equipment:
    It is used to create crucibles and other equipment that handle liquids at very high temperatures, such as those used in growing silicon crystals.
